Seven junior games took place over the course of the weekend and it proved to be another productive round of fixtures for our junior sides.
The standout performance came on Sunday in Derbyshire as our Under 16 Girls continued their perfect start to the season, moving to 3-0 in the league, with a commanding 96-42 win over Derbyshire Arrows.
Rhianna Shackleton, Beth Parnell-Lea and Tia May again led the scoring but this was a strong team performance from the girls.
Mateya Georgieva and Fatoumata Sarr-Sarr played great games as guards and were always controlling the pace. Sara Hamoud and Fariah Williams were tough in defence both getting numerous steals and blocks.
This excellent team showing was rounded off with Aminata Kamara, Aida Djohore-Badiane and 13-year-old Tahlia Christian getting numerous rebounds and all contributing to the points tally.
Coach Evans is very happy with the talented and young squad who continue to go from strength to strength.
It proved a tougher week for our Under 16 Boys Premier side, who suffered their first defeat of the campaign on the road against a strong Manchester Magic programme.
Coach Douglas’ side traded blows with Magic for much of the game, but a strong start to the game by our hosts ultimately proved to put the game beyond our reach.
This pattern was reversed for our Under 18 Girls’ home game against Charnwood College Riders, with Coach Elfrey’s side racing to a 29-12 first quarter lead en route to a convincing home win.
Rockets ultimately recorded an 80-59 home triumph to move to 2-2 to start the season and in doing so shot up to third in their divisional standings.
It was also a memorable weekend for Coach Afonso Tavares’ Under 14 Premier side, who recorded their maiden victory of the season at the Morningside Arena with a 60-55 win in Leicester on Sunday afternoon.
After starting the season slightly later than the rest of the league, Coach Tavares will be looking to build on Sunday’s momentum as his side face a packed schedule in the coming weeks.
In Saturday’s early tip-off, our Under 12 Mixed side recorded a convincing home win – running out 75-47 winners against Walsall Wizards.
Conversely, A tough third quarter saw our Under 18 Boys Premier side eventually fall to defeat at home against Huish Tigers.
Rockets took a nine point lead into the half but a strong comeback from our visitors saw the Tigers take the win.
