City of Birmingham Rockets Basketball Club are delighted to announce that Martyn Gayle is joining up with our Men’s First Team for the 2022/23 season!
Birmingham native Martyn, who began his affiliation with Rockets back in 2005 as a U18, is the record three-point shooter in NBL Division 1 history whilst his 96.4% free throw percentage comfortably led Division 1 last season.
Rockets CEO Robert Palmer, who coached Martyn during his previous spell at the club, believes the addition of Martyn is a statement of intent from the club as we head into 2022/23.
He said, “The signing of Martyn demonstrates our ambitions to bring big-time basketball back to Birmingham.
“I am delighted that Martyn recognises and understands the journey that our Rockets organisation is taking.
“Having known Martyn since he was five years old, his vibrant personality and character are well known to me. He represented the club at U18 level and has since gone on to have a fabulous career, including a stint in the BBL.
“His on-court qualities and achievements are clear for all to see, but we also see the huge value he will bring to the club off court when mentoring and leading some of our younger players.
“A proven Division 1 calibre leading player signing is a huge coup for the club.
“It is going to be an exciting season ahead and I urge the Birmingham community to support us as we build a roster and an organisation to be proud of.“
Martyn has enjoyed a stellar career in the British game, enjoying spells at Derby Trailblazers, Leicester Warriors and most recently Team Newcastle in Division One, whilst he has also spent time in the BBL with Birmingham Knights, Manchester Giants and Cheshire Phoenix.
Rockets Men’s First Team Head, Coach Nuno Rodrigues, is looking forward to working with him this season.
Coach Rodrigues said, “Martin is a huge addition to the roster, his return to COB will help us build an ambitious identity for the club.
“In his career, he has proven himself as a sharpshooter and a player with a proven character.
“I am really happy to see a Birmingham player come back and be a role model for our youngsters.”
Everyone associated with Rockets would like to wish Martyn a successful season and we look forward to seeing him representing the club this season!
