The Rockets Academy at Birmingham Metropolitan College face their second game of the season as they travel up to Newcastle to take on the Eagles Academy in the EABL Northern Conference this afternoon.
Last week’s home opener against Derby College Trailblazers ended in a 66-78 loss in what was the team’s inaugural fixture in this elite college competition. There were encouraging signs for the Rockets Academy who matched the visitors for long periods of the game, but ultimately fell to their more experienced midlands rivals.
Miles Moore led Rockets scoring with an impressive 25 points, whilst Suwayd Francis and first year Nektarious Papadopoulos both impressed; scoring 13 and 10 respectively.
Today’s opponents Newcastle have had a difficult start to the season, with two defeats; the most recent being a 48-72 defeat against Sheffield College – they will be looking for a reaction this afternoon as Rockets make the long journey to the North East.
The BMet Rockets Academy coaching team of Paul Douglas, Peter Mintoft and Ricardo D’Alva have been hard at work with the players since the start of the academic year and despite last week’s result, have been pleased with the progress made so far.
Ahead of the game, Coach Douglas was in positive mood, “Whilst our group lack experience at this level, they make up for it with their work ethic and a willingness to learn.
“This week the levels of intensity at practice have been good and we are looking forward to the trip to Newcastle, hopeful that we can return to the Midlands with a positive result!”
